Intergenerational interaction through participation in exercise festival: Experience of youth through elderly

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to understand and interpret the meaning of generational exchange experiences through physical activities of various generations from youth to the elderly in a social context. The research questions are as follows. First, what is the meaning of the generation exchange experience of the gymnastics festival for the participants? Second, if you interpret the meaning of generational exchange for each generation, what are the characteristics? Therefore, two teams from various generations were selected from among the participants of the ¡®Active-aging Health Exercise Festival¡¯ held in 2019 at Yonsei University, and a qualitative case study was conducted with a total of 18 participants in children/youth/adults/elderly. The results of this study are as follows: The meaning of the generational exchange experience of the participants was represented through three upper categories: ¡®joy to be together¡¯, ¡®care or withdrawal¡¯, and ¡®transition of perception¡¯, and the meaning of this result for each generation was analyzed.
In conclusion, it was confirmed that the experience of participating in the festival became an ¡®opportunity¡¯ that led to the special experiences, new discoveries, positive changes, and mental growth of the study participants. Based on this conclusion, this study suggested that the quality of the integrated generational education program and to provide opportunities for generational exchange, and for this, events such as exercise festivals should be held regularly.
